Sightseeing in Meißen – the cradle of Saxony, home of porcelain
View of the Meißen CathedralMeißen is known as the cradle of Saxony and is located about 15 kilometers west of Reichenberg. The founding of the castle “Misni” by Emperor Heinrich I in 929 marked the beginning of the oldest German settlement found on Saxon soil. The outpost was used for the expansion of the Germanic Empire due east. The late gothic Albrechtsburg, side by side with the Cathedral still reigning over the city today were built on the site of “Misni.” Today it is the landmark of the bend in the Elbe River entering Meißen. After visiting the castle and residence complex, one can descend the red steps into the historic city center dating back to the Middle Ages. A refreshing coffee break with delicious cake can be enjoyed at Cafe Zieger famous for Saxon’s “Fummelkuchen,” or test the savory wines of Saxony in Germany’s oldest wine restaurant Vincenz Richter. |
